The Jewish Jesus is missing. The Jesus we find in our creeds, hymns and prayers is the Christ of Christian faith, but where is the Jesus of history? How is the Jesus of history different from Jesus the Christ, and why should anyone care about that first, missing Jesus?

Stephen J. Patterson is the George H. Atkinson Professor of Religious and Ethical Studies, Willamette University, Salem, OR. His books include "The Forgotten Creed," which was given the $100,000 Graweeyer Award in Religion, and "The God of Jesus." He researches the origins of Christianity and has written extensively on the Gospel of Thomas. He is an authority on the historical figure of Jesus.

Robert J. Miller is the Rosenberger Professor of Religious Studies and Christian Thought at Juniata College, Huntingdon, PA. His books include "Born Divine: The Births of Jesus and Other Sons of God" and "Helping Jesus Fulfill Prophecy." Miller's research interests have been centered on the academic study of the Bible. He teaches courses in world religions, the philosophy of religion, science and religion, atheism, the afterlife, and the Holocaust.

The Missing Jesus: Where's He Been and Who's That in My Creed?
Friday, April 3, 2020
7:30 - 9:00 PM

The Jewish Jesus is missing. The Jesus we find in our creeds, hymns and prayers is the Christ of Christian faith. How is the Jesus of history different from Jesus the Christ, and why should anyone care about that first, missing Jesus?

Jesus the Provocateur: Hearing the Sayings of Jesus Anew
Saturday, April 4, 2020
9:30 - 10:30 AM

Jesus was a clever coiner of sayings, real zingers meant to provoke people to think and act in new ways. How was Jesus trying to get people to think differently? Do they still resonate?

Jesus the Dreamer: Hearing the Parables of Jesus Anew
11:00 - 12:00 PM

Jesus was also a clever storyteller. His "parables” were really just interesting stories that he made up. How did Jesus use narrative to help people imagine the world anew? Are they useful now?

Jesus the Healer: Entering the Spirit World of Jesus
1:30 - 2:30 PM

Jesus is said to have healed people by casting out unclean spirits. What did Jesus think those unclean spirits were and how did he cast them out? Why does it matter?

Discussion (Q&A)
3:00 - 4:00 PM

Our visiting scholars will take questions and engage participants in a conversation about what has intrigued or puzzled them about "the missing Jesus."
